Dabu printing, an ancient mud-resist hand-block printing technique from Rajasthan, India, involves a unique process of using a specially prepared mud (Dabu) to resist dye. Artisans hand-carve designs onto wooden blocks, then stamp them onto fabric using the Dabu paste. After drying, the fabric is dyed, often with natural dyes like indigo, resulting in the resisted areas maintaining their original color while the rest of the fabric takes on the dye color. This eco-friendly and labor-intensive art produces intricate, earth-toned patterns, often characterized by indigo backgrounds with white and grey motifs, reflecting traditional Indian aesthetics.
