Dabu printing, originating from Rajasthan, India, is a traditional mud-resist hand-block printing technique. This eco-friendly art uses a special mud paste (Dabu) applied on cloth with wooden blocks, creating intricate patterns. After the mud application, the cloth is sprinkled with sawdust and dried, allowing the design to resist dye. Submerged in dye baths, typically indigo, the untreated areas absorb color, while the mud-resist areas remain uncolored. Post-dyeing, the mud is washed off, revealing the pattern. Dabu prints are characterized by their earthy and rustic appeal. This labor-intensive process supports sustainable practices and the livelihood of artisan communities.
