The first nip in the air always arrives quietly. One morning the fan feels too much, the old dohar does not feel quite enough, and by the time Karwa Chauth comes around on Thursday, 29 October, most of North India is reaching for something warmer at night. With Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November, Diwali Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, 8 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November, this is also the season when homes fill with guests and when many families make their one big bedding purchase of the year.

If a new comforter is on your Dhanteras list, this guide will help you choose well. We explain what GSM really means, how fill and cover fabric change the feel, which size suits which bed, and how to care for your comforter so it stays fluffy through many winters. Browse our full Comforters collection as you read.

Comforter, Quilt or Dohar: A Quick Recap

A comforter is a soft, filled bed cover that is stitched (quilted) so the filling stays evenly spread. A dohar is a thin layered cotton throw for mild weather, and a traditional razai is a heavier, often cotton-filled quilt for peak winter. For most Indian homes, a well-chosen comforter is the most versatile option: warm for November nights and light enough for AC rooms.

What Does GSM Mean in a Comforter?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. On a comforter, it tells you how much filling is packed into each square metre. The higher the GSM, the more filling, and generally the warmer and puffier the comforter feels. Here is a simple way to think about it:

  • Around 150 GSM: light and airy. Ideal for babies and toddlers, for AC rooms, or for regions where winter is mild.
  • Around 300 GSM: the all-rounder. Warm enough for cool autumn and early-winter nights in most of India, yet not so heavy that it feels stuffy. In very cold weather, you can layer it with a blanket or dohar.
  • Higher GSM: built for colder hill-station winters and very cold bedrooms.

Our reversible microfibre comforters use a 300 GSM filling, and our kids' comforters use a lighter 150 GSM filling, which suits little ones who kick off heavy covers at night.

Weight Matters Too

GSM tells you about the filling; the total weight tells you how the comforter will feel on your body. For example, our 300 GSM double bed comforters weigh about 2.2 kg, our single bed comforters about 1.4 kg and our kids' comforters about 0.7 kg. If you like a cosy, tucked-in feeling, pick a slightly heavier option; if you feel warm easily, stay lighter and layer up when needed.

Fill and Cover Fabric: How They Change the Feel

Thermal Bonded Microfibre Fill

Most of our comforters are filled with thermal bonded microfibre. The fibres are bonded so they hold their shape, and strong machine quilting keeps the fill from bunching into corners. Microfibre is hypoallergenic, odour-free and home washable, which makes it a practical choice for families, guest rooms and kids' rooms.

Pure Cotton Covers

If breathability is your priority, look at comforters with a pure cotton cover. Our Bedsheet and Comforter combos pair a 240 TC pure cotton comforter, filled with premium hypoallergenic fibre, with a matching 100% cotton double bedsheet. Cotton feels skin-friendly and less "plasticky" than synthetic fabric, especially in AC rooms. These combo comforters are dry clean only, so keep that in mind when you plan your laundry routine.

Reversible Designs

Nearly every comforter in our range is reversible, so you get two looks in one. A deep maroon side can feel festive for Diwali week, and a calmer grey side can take over on regular days.

Choosing the Right Comforter Size

A comforter that is too small leaves shoulders cold and looks skimpy on the bed. Use these real sizes from our range as a guide:

  • Double bed comforter: 214 x 236 cm (7 ft x 7.8 ft), suitable for double and king size beds. Browse Double Bed Comforters.
  • Single bed comforter: 230 x 150 cm (7.55 ft x 5 ft), good for single beds, diwans and students' rooms. Browse Single Bed Comforters.
  • Kids' comforter: 128 x 107 cm (50 x 42 inches), sized for cribs and toddler beds. Browse Kids Comforters.
  • Combo comforter: 229 x 254 cm (90 x 100 inches), a generous size that drapes well over a double bed.

Caring for Your Comforter

  • Check the label first: our microfibre comforters are home washable, while our cotton combo comforters are dry clean only.
  • Air it out: before the first use of the season, spread your comforter in the shade on a breezy day to freshen it.
  • Use a top sheet or cover: it keeps the comforter cleaner for longer and means fewer washes.
  • Fluff regularly: give it a good shake every few days so the filling stays even.
  • Store it right: when winter ends, store it clean and fully dry in a breathable cotton bag, never in plastic.
