There is a special moment every year when the evenings turn cool and someone in the family says, "Razai nikaal lo." After months in a trunk, loft or bed box, your quilts, comforters and blankets need a little care before they are ready for cosy nights. With Karwa Chauth on Thursday, 29 October, Dhanteras on Friday, 6 November, Diwali Lakshmi Puja on Sunday, 8 November and Bhai Dooj on Wednesday, 11 November, this is the right fortnight to unpack, air and refresh your winter bedding, so every bed is warm and fresh before relatives arrive.
Here is a simple routine to bring your razai out of storage, clean it right, layer it and store it well. To browse as you read, open our Quilts and Comforters collections. Please check each product page for live sizes, options and stock before you order.
Step 1: Unpack and Inspect Your Razai
Open the storage bag or trunk in daylight and unfold each piece completely. Look for three things:
- Smell: A slightly stale, closed-up smell is normal after months in storage. A sharp, musty smell means damp got in, and that piece needs a longer airing and a proper clean.
- Spots and stains: Check the borders and the side that faces the pillow, where oil and skin contact leave marks.
- Stitching and filling: Run your hands over the quilt. Loose stitches, thin patches or lumpy filling are easier to fix now than in the middle of a cold night.
Then sort pieces into two piles: airing only, or washing and dry cleaning.
Step 2: Give It Some Winter Sun
Sunlight is the oldest and kindest freshener for Indian bedding. Spread your quilt over a clean charpai, a railing covered with an old bedsheet, or a drying stand on the terrace.
- Choose gentle sun: Mid-morning sun in October and November is ideal. Two to three hours is usually enough.
- Turn it over: Flip the quilt halfway through so both sides get air.
- Shake and pat: Before bringing it in, shake the quilt and pat it lightly to loosen dust and fluff the filling.
Step 3: Clean Each Piece the Right Way
Not all winter bedding is washed the same way. Always follow the care label first. Here is how the pieces in this guide are listed on our product pages:
Hand Quilted Cotton Razai: Dry Clean Only
Our Traditional Tree Motifs Reversible Saffron Floral Print Double Sided Quilt Rajai has a premium cotton cover, 250 GSM cotton filling and hand quilted tagaai work, and its care instruction is Dry Clean Only. Do not put a cotton-filled razai in the washing machine, because the filling can bunch up. Air it in the sun between uses, and send it for dry cleaning when it truly needs a clean. The same care applies to the Reversible Quilt Rajai with Golden Corn Dual-Design Print for Stylish Bedrooms.
Microfibre Comforters: Home Washable
If you want something you can wash at home, a comforter is easier. The Pale Pink & Dark Grey Double Bed Comforter has 300 GSM thermal bonded microfibre filling with strong machine quilting, and it is listed as home washable. Dry it completely in the shade or sun before you use it or store it.
Dohars, Woolen Bedsheets and Blankets
Lighter layers can usually go in the machine. The Peacock Garden Pure Cotton Reversible Single / Double Bed AC Quilt Dohar and the Luxurious Beige Super Soft Woolen Double Bedsheet with Matching Pillow Covers are both listed as machine washable. For plush blankets, check the label and wash gently.
Step 4: Layer for the Changing Weather
October and November nights change quickly. Early in the season a full razai can feel too warm, while by Chhath and late November most of North India needs it.
- Late October: A cotton dohar or AC quilt over a regular bedsheet is enough for most homes. Browse our Dohar collection for single and double sizes.
- Early November: Switch to a woolen bedsheet underneath for a warm, soft base, and keep a comforter at the foot of the bed for cooler nights. See our Woolen range.
- From Diwali onwards: Bring out the full cotton razai. On the coldest nights, add a plush blanket such as the Velvet Plush Mocha Brown Double Bed Blanket layered with Ultra-Soft Sherpa Fabric, which has a velvet exterior and sherpa lining. Explore more in our Blankets collection.
A neat trick: fold the quilt in thirds across the foot of the bed during the day. It looks styled, stays aired and is ready to pull up at night.
Step 5: Make the Guest Bed Festive
Diwali and Bhai Dooj often mean a full house. A freshly sunned razai on the guest bed is one of the warmest welcomes you can give. The coral tree border on our Traditional Tree Motifs quilt looks lovely with white pillows and brass diyas on the bedside table, while the Golden Corn quilt brings a warm, golden glow that suits Lakshmi Puja decor.

Step 6: Store It Well When Winter Ends
Good storage in March makes next October much easier. When you pack your quilts away:
- Make sure it is clean and fully dry: Even slight damp can cause a musty smell and spots.
- Use breathable covers: A cotton bag or an old cotton bedsheet lets the fabric breathe. Avoid sealing cotton quilts tightly in plastic for months.
- Keep it off the floor: Store quilts on a shelf, in a trunk or a bed box, away from damp walls.
- Add a natural freshener: Many families tuck in dried neem leaves or a small cloth pouch of cloves, kept in a pouch so nothing touches the fabric directly.
Your Razai Care Plan for the Festive Season
- This week: Unpack, inspect and sun every quilt, comforter and blanket.
- Before Karwa Chauth (29 October): Wash bedsheets, dohars and comforters; send cotton razais for dry cleaning if needed.
- Before Dhanteras (6 November): Make up the guest bed with fresh layers.
- Diwali (8 November) to Chhath (15 November): Switch to the full razai and woolen bedsheets as the nights get colder.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I wash a cotton razai in the washing machine?
It is best not to. Cotton-filled quilts like our hand quilted razais are Dry Clean Only, because machine washing can make the filling bunch up. Sun them regularly and dry clean when needed.
How long should I keep my quilt in the sun?
Two to three hours of gentle mid-morning sun is usually enough. Turn it over halfway and bring it in before evening.
How do I get rid of the storage smell?
Air the quilt in sunlight, shake it out and let it breathe for a day. If a musty smell stays, it needs a proper clean as per its care label.
A fresh, sun-warmed razai is one of the simple joys of an Indian winter. Unpack early, care for each piece the right way and layer smartly, and your home will be cosy and guest-ready for Karwa Chauth, Dhanteras, Diwali and Bhai Dooj. Wishing you a warm and joyful festive season from all of us at JaipurFabric®.
